We’ve spent years travelling with no fixed return date.
From a 12-month backpacking trip around the globe, a full ski season in Japan, to 4 months travelling the full length of South America. We’ve experienced the real-world scenarios where having the best travel insurance for backpackers has been an absolute lifesaver.
In this guide, we’ll break down the best travel insurance for long-term backpackers in 2026, based on real experiences and the exact trips you’re likely planning. Whether that’s a gap year, working holiday, ski season, or open-ended slow travel adventure.
Why Every Backpacker Needs Travel Insurance (4 Years of Real Experience)
Having travel insurance has always been a no-brainer for me and it’s something I make sure we both have on every trip.
But every time I go to take out a policy for long term travelling I’m left feeling like I’m throwing money away. The policies are expensive, and even more so when you take out cover for winter sports or diving, etc.
It wasn’t until our travels through South America that I finally got to experience the ‘joys’ of using my travel insurance for the first time. Up until this point we’d been fairly lucky in that we’d had no major incidents on our travels. No expensive hospital visits, no crashes, no cancelled flights, no lost luggage and no theft.
However, a mere ten days into our South America trip I was robbed of every piece of camera gear I had with me.
My camera, lenses, drone, GoPro, hard drive. All gone.
Gear that I had carried all over the world with me.
Fortunately, by some stroke of luck, this was the first long term trip where I actually took out gadget insurance as part of my backpacking travel insurance. And whilst the process for submitting my claim was arduous, I was able to recover some of the costs thanks to my insurance.
We had to buy a new camera after getting robbed. Worth it to take this shot on the Salkantay Trek.
Why Standard Travel Insurance Isn't the Best for Backpackers
I used to be the person who bought the cheapest policy the night before a flight and called it done. But after years of travel as a backpacker across three continents, I’ve learned the hard way that most standard travel insurance simply isn’t the best option for backpackers doing extended trips.
What most people don’t realise is that the majority of high-street travel insurance policies cap out at 30–45 days. Great for a package holiday. But for a gap year, a working holiday, a ski season, or an open-ended nomad stint. You need something built for the reality of extended travel.
What you’re looking for is either a long-stay or backpacker policy (available in 3, 6, or 12-month increments) or an annual multi-trip policy if you’re constantly bouncing between countries. And before you commit to anything, check these:
- Medical cover: Aim for at least £1–2 million. That sounds like a lot until you’re airlifted off a mountain.
- Evacuation cover: Separate from medical, and eye-wateringly expensive without it.
- Activity cover: Skiing, hiking, and water sports are routinely excluded by default. Always check. If you’re working a ski season, make sure it covers you for the full season, not just a few days.
- Gear limits: The per-item limit is almost always much lower than the total. Read the small print.
- Home visit clauses: Some policies let you briefly pop home without voiding your cover.
- Pre-existing conditions: Always declare them. No exceptions. The insurer will look for any reason not to pay out.

Best Travel Insurance Providers for Backpackers
World Nomads - Best Travel Insurance for Adventure Backpackers
On our first 12-month backpacking trip across Western Europe, South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, we relied entirely on World Nomads. For backpackers planning adventure-heavy travel, it remains one of the best travel insurance options we’ve tested.
World Nomads covers over 200 activities as standard. The kind of things most long-term travel insurance policies either exclude or charge extra for. So if like us you want to bungee jump in New Zealand, skydive in Australia or learn to scuba dive in Thailand. World Nomads has you covered.
Their medical and evacuation limits are strong, and crucially, you can extend your policy while already travelling, which matters more than you’d think when plans inevitably change.
Fortunately for us, we didn’t have to make any claims. However, we’ve heard the claims process can be slow, although that feels like a common occurrence with most insurance providers.
If your trip involves more than sitting on a beach then we highly recommend World Nomads.
Too late to turn back now! Me bungee jumping in New Zealand.
Big Cat - Best Travel Insurance for Backpackers Doing Ski Seasons
If you’re heading off for a ski season, whether a few weeks or a full winter in a resort. Big Cat is the one we’d point you toward. It’s the exact policy we used for our ski season in Japan, and we wouldn’t go back to anything else for winter travel.
Winter sports cover can be particularly fiddly. Most standard long-term travel insurance policies either exclude it entirely or bury a list of restrictions in the small print. A big one to look out for is how many days you’re allowed to ski.
Big Cat builds it in properly. Piste closure, lost ski passes, avalanche delays, and lets you choose how many ski days you plan to have. Their long-stay policies are also clearly designed with full seasons in mind, not just a two week holiday. That distinction really matters when you’re living in a resort for three to five months.
We weren’t only in Japan for the ski season, we spent 6 months outside of the ski season travelling all over Japan on a WHV and were covered by Big Cat the entire time. It’s definitely something for every traveller, not just those on a ski season.
We went with the Single Trip travel insurance with Winter Sports added on.
True Traveller - Best Travel Insurance for UK Backpackers
For UK residents specifically, True Traveller is one of the strongest long-stay travel insurance options we’ve found. Their policies cover up to 18 months of continuous travel, they’re competitively priced, and the policy wording is actually readable. Which might sound like a low bar, but it actually isn’t.
We learned to appreciate clear policy wording the hard way after getting robbed in Colombia.
Having to navigate a claim under stress. Whether it’s a visit to the hospital or all your camera gear has been robbed. You don’t want to be deciphering dense legal jargon from a hostel in Medellin. True Traveller’s straightforward wording is a genuine selling point.
The one thing to note though is that winter sports and some adventure activities are add-ons, rather than included, so factor that in if it’s relevant to your trip.
New Zealand is bucket-list material. Just make sure you’re insured before you tick it off.
Outbacker - Best Budget Travel Insurance for Backpackers
Full disclosure, we haven’t used Outbacker personally. But after digging deep into the reviews and policy wording, it keeps coming up as one of the best budget options for UK backpackers, so it earns its place here.
The pricing is genuinely competitive, and they don’t gut the cover to get there. Medical expenses are covered up to £10 million, 230+ sports and activities are included as standard, and policies run up to 18 months across multiple countries.
Working abroad is covered as standard too, which is a big deal if you’re on a working holiday visa.
The one thing of concern is that claims can be slow. They pay, but there’s often a lot of back and forth involved, so document absolutely everything from day one. Something which you should do with any claim really.
Moped cover is also a grey area, which matters more than you’d think when you’re in Southeast Asia and just about anyone will han you keys to a scooter. Call them and check before you ride.
Just make sure you have the correct license, otherwise your insurance might not cover you!
How to Choose the Best Travel Insurance for Backpackers
After being robbed in South America, the first thing I look for on a travel insurance policy is the gadget cover. I honestly, think that in this day and age it’s something that everyone should have, even if you don’t have expensive camera gear.
Everyone travels with a phone these days and it’s the main way we record the incredible memories we make travelling. Having your phone stollen or broken, and being unable to capture those memories can really ruin your travels.
Cover your phone, back-up to the cloud, and travel worry free.
When you’re comparing options to find the best travel insurance for backpackers, focus on these six essentials:
Medical Cover — Protects you against unexpected healthcare costs abroad, which can quickly spiral into thousands of pounds. Without it, even a minor emergency could result in devastating bills in some countries.
Cancellation Cover — Reimburses non-refundable trip costs if you need to cancel before departure due to illness, injury, or unforeseen circumstances. This protects your holiday investment if life gets in the way.
Lost Baggage — Covers the cost of replacing your belongings if your luggage is delayed, lost, or damaged by the airline. Essential for recovering essentials while waiting for your bags or replacing items entirely. Fortunately, after over 100 flights we haven’t lost any luggage… yet!
Theft — Provides compensation if your valuables or personal items are stolen during your travels. Gives you peace of mind when exploring unfamiliar destinations. Just make sure to have receipts and check your coverage limits.
Adventure Activities — Extends cover to high-risk activities like hiking or water sports that standard policies often exclude. Critical if your trip involves anything beyond beach holidays and city breaks.
Personal Liability — Covers costs if you accidentally damage property or injure someone else, protecting you from costly legal claims abroad. Often overlooked but invaluable if something unexpected happens. My worst nightmare is accidentally causing distress to someone else and not only having to deal with the guilt but also the cost.
The right travel insurance combines all these protections into one affordable policy, ensuring that whatever happens during your trip, you’re covered. Don’t leave home without it!
Which Travel Insurance Works Best for Your Backpacking Style?
Choosing the best travel insurance for backpackers really comes down to the type of trip you’re planning and how much risk you’re willing to take on the road.
If you’re planning a gap year or long-term trip with a mix of adventure activities, flexible destinations, and changing plans, then World Nomads is a strong all-round option. For UK travellers heading out on longer journeys or working holidays, True Traveller is often better value with more tailored long-stay cover. If your focus is a ski season or winter sports-heavy trip, Big Cat Travel Insurance is one of the most reliable specialist options we’ve used. And if you’re travelling on a tighter budget but still want solid cover, Outbacker is worth a look.
After four years of full-time travel, one thing we’ve learnt is that the “best” policy isn’t the cheapest or the most popular. It’s the one that actually covers what you’re doing when something goes wrong.
If you’re heading off on a long-term trip in 2026, it’s worth taking the time to compare policies properly rather than defaulting to the cheapest option. A good policy can easily be the difference between a stressful setback and a financially devastating situation.
Frequently Asked Questions About Backpacker Travel Insurance
Do I really need travel insurance for backpacking?
Technically, no. But after four years of travel, I wouldn't leave home without it. For years I never made a claim and questioned whether it was worth the money. Then, just ten days into a trip through South America, I had thousands of pounds worth of camera gear stolen. Without insurance, I'd have had to absorb the entire loss myself. Travel insurance isn't just for medical emergencies, it can also protect you against theft, trip cancellations, and lost baggage.
What is the best travel insurance for backpackers?
The best backpacker travel insurance depends on the type of trip you're planning. We recommend World Nomads for adventure travel, Big Cat for ski seasons, True Traveller for UK backpackers looking for strong all-round cover, and Outbacker for those travelling on a tighter budget.
Is long-term travel insurance the same as backpacker insurance?
In most cases, yes. The terms are often used interchangeably. Backpacker travel insurance is designed for one continuous trip lasting several months and typically covers multiple countries and a wider range of activities. Annual multi-trip insurance, by contrast, covers multiple shorter trips throughout the year.
How long can travel insurance cover you for?
It depends on the provider. Most long-term travel insurance policies cover between 12 and 18 months of continuous travel. True Traveller offers cover for up to 18 months, while some providers offer longer durations or rolling policies that can be renewed while you're abroad.
Can I buy long-term travel insurance after I've already left home?
Some providers allow it, but many don't. Most backpacker insurance policies need to be purchased before you leave your home country. If you're already travelling, you'll need to specifically look for a provider that allows policies to be started while abroad.
Does travel insurance cover stolen phones, cameras and laptops?
Usually, but not always. Most policies include some level of gadget or personal belongings cover, but the per-item limit can be surprisingly low. If you're travelling with expensive camera equipment, drones, laptops, or other valuables, check the policy limits carefully and consider adding extra gadget cover if necessary.
Does long-term travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?
Some policies do, but coverage varies significantly between providers and medical conditions. Always declare any pre-existing conditions when purchasing insurance. Failing to disclose them could invalidate a future claim, even if the condition isn't directly related to the incident.
Does travel insurance cover working holidays?
Many backpacker insurance policies do cover working holidays, but not all types of work are included. If you're heading to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, or another country on a working holiday visa, check exactly what types of employment are covered before purchasing a policy.
How much does long-term travel insurance cost?
As a rough guide, expect to pay between £30 and £70 per month for quality long-term travel insurance. The final price depends on factors such as your age, destination, trip length, and any activities you're planning. Winter sports and adventure activity add-ons will usually increase the premium.
Is ski cover included in standard long-term travel insurance?
Usually not. Most long-term travel insurance policies either exclude winter sports entirely or require you to purchase additional cover. If you're heading on a ski trip or spending a full season in the mountains, make sure your policy specifically includes winter sports cover and enough ski days for your trip.
